Team Scotland

We like it! Where can I get a shirt?

Yes we have some tickets and we will be heading to Glasgow ( rugby, athletics, boxing and curry). Crail is maybe not the most obvious choice for  games accommodation  but nice for a change of scenery after the city.

There is no better time than the present with so much going on now or very soon. Looking further into the future, Scotland will decide on her future with the referendum in September but before that we have a look back - 700 years.

The 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn will be celebrated although I prefer that this is a celebration of our hertitage and culture rather than the battle itself.

For the record we went to Bannockburn Live and had a great day on the Sunday - thanks

The organisors of the event state: they will be :celebrating the best of Scottish traditional and contemporary music, food and drink and more. http://www.bannockburnlive.com/home

Sounds good to me!

Dougie Maclean

There is loads going on, re-enactments, clan activities, family fun and of course food and drink. It looks like a really good musical offering too with Dougie Maclean and King Creosote;two of my personal favourites.

Lets have some fun and look back for a while.

Father of the National Parks

There are some great long distance walks in Scotland the most famous being the West Highland Way from Glasgow ( Milganvie) to Ft William through some amazing scenery. This was extended to Inverness some years ago under the Great Glen Way banner,Nessie spotting is an added extra!

The Fife Coastal Path has proven popular over the last ten years, I particularly like Crail to St Andrews, the approach to The Old Grey Toon is wonderful. FCP goes right passed the door at Caiplie, using the 95 bus you can do loads of great walking from the house as the bus route runs parallel to the path along the coast, so you are never more than a mile from the bus route for getting home then starting off again in the same place.

view to St Andrews

A new path has arrived marking the 100th anniversary of the conservationist John Muirs death, the John Muir Way opened in April. The 134-mile-long trail runs coast-to-coast from Muir's hometown of Dunbar all the way to Loch Lomond, passing by castles, hills and canals along the way. Walking the length of the Way will take eight to 12 days (or four to six by bike). You could of course turn North on TWHW at Loch Lomond and on to Inverness....be brave!

More great reasons to visit/stay in Scotland this year coming soon.........

We are all guilty from time to time of thinking that our own little world and life is the centre of the universe right? Surely this year in Scotland we are justified to feel like we really are?

In a series of blogs we will explore 10tatsic events and activities that should attract you to Scotland or make sure you get out and make the most of your country.

2014 is a Homecoming Year - the country welcomes home it's diasopora or just folk who like Scotland. This programme itself brings together a vast array of brilliant events under a number of themes.

You can get a taste here

What looks to be a real gem is the Tummel and Tay Festival under the whisky theme. This runs in late May across Highland Perthshire: The Birks Cinema, Birnam Arts and Pitlochry Festival Theatre are promoting a shared programme of whisky themed content. They are supported by the local distilleries.......

Are you travelling with friends or family from abroad? Have you come back to your roots? Please quote 'Homecoming Blog'' for your free Homecoming welcome pack at Caiplie House to add something extra to your holiday in Fife

It dawned on us slowly that we were in fact the perfect customers for our own business or was that in-fact our motivation to re-position the business?

Last year we went to Skye, Crieff and the Lakes accompanied by Grandparents, a few siblings, Aunties, Uncles etc

Family holiday accommodation

We realise that you can fill a big house pretty easily with a family group of 10 or 12 and that when we are looking for holiday accommodation for families we are the perfect  3 generation holiday makers.! Thanks to Granny and Grandad we have already enjoyed a ski holiday and a cycling trip already this year. THANKS

Plan your family holiday

Last Spring I tramped along some great paths in preparation for Maggies Monster Hike. I walked in many different parts of Scotland getting the legs, feet and mind ready for the monster.

I was supported and accompanied by friends and family and together we discovered some great tracks and enjoyed re-visiting some old favourites.

What became clear is that we have a great network of disused railway lines, they are now being put to good use as walking and MTB tracks.

The old line from Crail to St Andrews is a classic example, it is a really good path between Crail ( Hammer Inn) and Kingsbarns.

Check out this and other routes collated by Tom of Collective Training. Photo www.collectivetraining.co.uk

Caiplie has seen a few transitions over the years;

From bakers and tea-room in Victorian times through  to B&B Guest House. The change  to B&B happened in 1977 after almost a century of being first Duncan the bakers then Fisher and then Fisher and Donaldson bakers.

Many locals still remember the bakers shop here with the bakehouse out on the back lane. There was also a time when ice cream was sold from the front window!

A number of owners offered meals to residents and non residents. Dinner at Caiplie and Caiplie Bistro saw a seasonal restaurant appear and most recently John McFetridge of Mountain Relish offered Coastal Relish @ Caiplie

Yet again this grand old lady has had a transformation....now back to the original dimensions of the Victorian house and available to let as one holiday house. It is a cracking house if we say so ourselves.

In this latest transition we added a gas central heating system. This will make the house comfortable for groups all year round. With the two open fires totaly toastie actually!

We had to get into the heart of the old house, floorboards up doors off etc but the result was worth it!
